Portable AC/DC Power Source

We all have our power addictions, and they all require us to keep thinking of where the nearest AC plug is, or if we have the correct wire to use in the car.  Didn’t you ever run into a RadioShack store to buy that charging cable that you HAD to have RIGHT NOW? You’re nodding.  I understand just how it is.  Now there appears to be an arms race in the portable power department to help us all, but mostly to help us out of some of our money. You can buy more batteries for your Android phone, but what if you’re on iPhone? (I’ll take that trade-off any day, btw!) You have cameras, gps units, cell phones, portable rechargeable lights, drones (!!), and other devices that need power, and lot’s of it. Ever notice how fast playing Clash of Clans will kill your phone battery?  Exactly.

Anker has come out with a new portable power source that is pretty amazing on paper, until you realize that it costs $500.  Yes, $500.  Go check it out here for yourself.   This monster, as ExtremeTech points out, is  ‘a battery that’s pretty much guaranteed to handle anything up to and including your next backpacking trip across the Sahara, zombie apocalypse, or run-in with a Terminator sent to kill you and your mother.’  Well put, ExtremeTech, well put!   I have an alternative in mind, one that I already use and that is very useful both in a photo studio and on the road when the MacBook burns through its battery at an inopportune moment. The solution I speak of is none other than the Paul C. Buff Vagabond Mini Lithium, and for a mere $250 you get 1/3 the new power output of the Anker.  Sure, you say, 1/2 the cost, 1/3 the power, great bargain!  But wait – do you really have $500 to drop on a power source?  Is it too much for what the average person really needs?  That may well be the case.  Judge for yourself….

Anker’s new battery can charge your phone, Tesla Model S, or phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range
